Bailey is my slightly over-weight chihuahua that means the world to me. I got her as I was starting my senior year of college. It was a total accident that I ended up with her.
My brother thought it would be a great idea to get his 2-year-old a dog. He knew someone who had chihuahua puppies and thought it would be a good idea. It turned out to be a horrible idea. My nephew Nyk would pull on her, throw her around, and just be plain rough with a puppy. To get revenge the dog would poop under his bed. Goes to show, don’t piss off my dog or she’ll poop under your bed. (She does this to me sometimes when I ignore her.)
So my brother called me up asking if I wanted a dog. My answer was “Duh!!” I had to ask my roommate because 1) it was her house and 2) she had a dog too. Thankfully she didn’t object, I put down a pet deposit and Bailey was mine!!
One problem though, I was in College Station and my new puppy was waiting for me in San Antonio. With work and school starting in a few days, I couldn’t just take off. So after a desperate phone call to my dad, I convinced him and my mom to drive the three-hour trip to give me my lovely little puppy. (I will always and forever be a daddy’s girl.)
There was another little snag. My brother had named the puppy Einstein after the kids show “Little Einstein”. That name was not going to fly with me. Funny part is that I asked my brother if the puppy was a boy or a girl. He said boy and once again, he was wrong. (My brother is wrong A LOT, not just when it comes to things pertaining to animals.)
So after I convinced my parents to bring me my new dog, I had to figure out a better name than Einstein. Ashley, one of my roommates at the time, and I spent all afternoon trying to come up with names. Nothing really worked. I really like the name Riley but I thought that was more of a boy’s name than a girl’s name.
The night before I was to get my pretty little girl, I was watching “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” Yes, I was a college senior watching a movie made for tweens, don’t judge. Anyways, a supporting character’s name was Bailey. I started to mull the name over that night and decided that my new puppy would be named Bailey.
My parents arrived the next day and to my surprise she was the exact color of Bailey’s Irish Cream!! So Bailey seemed like the perfect name. I also bought a bottle of Bailey’s Irish Cream in my doggy’s honor. Yes, I am that person.
Anyways, I couldn’t be happier when I got baby Bailey. She was a whole 2 pounds!! A lot has changed. She is now a slightly over-weight at 8 pounds.
Needless to say, I love my dog. She means the world to me. When I moved from San Antonio to DC, I knew I could leave her with my mom. I would miss her too much. So I made the decision to bring her with me. I haven’t looked back.
A few things about Bailey. Even though she is a chihuahua, she doesn’t bark at people, is super friendly (she’s a licker), and loves people. She does have a bit of an attitude and is a major attention whore. If she is around and you are not paying attention to her, she will make her presence known.
Bailey has been there for me during some of the most difficult times in my life. Through the good and the bad, through love and lose, through thick and thin, I know that no matter what I have her to come home to. I can come home from a hard day at work and have her lick my pain away. No seriously, she loves to lick my feet and it feels like a nice massage. It’s awesome.
In the end, Bailey and I are duo that if you don’t like one, you can’t have the other. Yes, she is my baggage, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
(Please ignore Bailey’s evil eyes. She was giving them just because I had dressed her up in a bumble bee outfit.)
